Allen Bradley - Drives

PowerFlex 700

The PowerFlex 700 series of products include a wide variety of devices and parts. These devices include AC drives, upgrade kits, human interface modules, and much more. These products were designed by the company known as Allen Bradley/Rockwell Automation. The AC drives of the PowerFlex 700 product series offer excellent performance. In addition, these products are simple and easy to use. These AC drives are typically utilized to control 3-phase induction motors in applications requiring speed control, torque control, and more. The PowerFlex 700 AC drives feature sensorless vector, volts per hertz, and vector control. These AC drives have a 3-phase voltage rating that can range from 240 volts AC to 690 volts AC. The frame size of these drives can also range from 0 to 6. The output current ratings of the PowerFlex 700 AC drives range from 1.1 amperes to 875 amperes. Additionally, the output power ratings of these AC drives range from 0.5 horsepower to 700 horsepower or 0.37 kilowatts to 500 kilowatts. The PowerFlex 700-series AC drives come equipped with an enclosure. The typical enclosure of these products is a NEMA/UL Type 1 enclosure with a conformal coat and an IP20 Ingress Protection rating. Furthermore, the PowerFlex 700 AC drives can feature an operator interface consisting of an LCD display and a full numeric keypad. These AC drives can also feature an encoder for feedback purposes. These devices may also include a ControlNet, DeviceNet, or EtherNet/IP communication slot. The products that make up the PowerFlex 700 product series should only be operated in an environment where the temperature ranges from 0 - 65 degrees Celsius. Additionally, these products should be stored in an environment where the temperature ranges from -40 - 70 degrees Celsius.

PowerFlex 700 Selection Guide

The PowerFlex 700 AC drives offer exceptional performance and are user-friendly. They are specifically designed for controlling 3-phase induction motors in oil wells, speed, lift, and positioning areas where the applications range from simple speed control to torque control. They are a cost-effective solution for changing torque pump and fan applications that need speed control. The vector control in this drive has Allen-Bradley Force Technology for the latest motor control. This drive series also supports Volts per Hertz (V/Hz) and Sensorless Vector Control.

This guide discusses all the features of the PowerFlex 700 AC drive series. That will help the reader to choose the best drive model from this series.

Features of the PowerFlex 700 Series

The PowerFlex 700 AC drive series offers drives with frame sizes ranging from 0 to 9, multiple voltage classes, and power ratings. Each of these drives offers unique features as discussed below.

1. Space Saving Hardware Features

These drives are 68 percent smaller compared to other global drives. These drives incorporate the following hardware features that allow for saving space on a panel.

  • Integrated EMC filtering and DC bus choke mode cores and standard mode capacitors give us a compressed, all-in-one package for completing the EMC needs i.e., minimizing interference emissions thus increasing immunity to internal and external interferences. It is only incorporated in drives with frame sizes 0 to 6.
  • Internal communication helps in integrating production operations. The status indicators are on the top for setting up easily and monitoring all the drive communication. We can easily maintain all the information from the shop to the top floor and smoothly integrate all the systems as they are controlling, configuring, and collecting information.
  • The internal dynamic brake transistors help in delivering economical methods of switching reformative energy without any expensive chopper circuits attached externally. These transistors are only incorporated in drives with power ratings of 0.5 to 200 horsepower.
  • Internal dynamic brake resistor is incorporated into drives with a power rating of up to 25 horsepower and needs no extra panel spaces and can provide huge amounts of braking torque for a short time.
  • Side-by-side (zero) stacking of drives is permittable for Frame sizes 0 to 6. This configuration enables access to one drive without interfering with another.

2. User-friendly HIM Tools

This series provides us with Human Interface tools that are commonly available and quite user-friendly. This includes LCD HIMs and PC-based configuration systems.

The LCD module has a wide and easy-to-read 7-line x 21-character backlit display with various language options for operators. Control keys, alternate functional keys, and number pads for feasible data entry operations and operator interactions.

PC-based configuration systems are used for quick and feasible configuration and control programming with integration with the HMI editor. This includes

  • Intuitive interfaces and startup wizard
  • Local languages support
  • Online and offline configuration
  • Support all the PowerFlex drives, PLCs, and PanelView

3. Motor Control Algorithm

There is a variety of motor control algorithms that allow the drive to be application based.

  • Volts/hertz is used for simple applications like fans and pumps.
  • Sensorless vectors for maintaining and producing higher values of torque over a wider range of speeds.
  • Vector for regulating torque exceptionally and lower speed performances.

4. Communication Options

Some of the drives from this series have internal communication options, depending on the code at position 15 of the catalog number.

The PowerFlex 700 AC drives can be connected to external communication modules. External compatible communication modules are connected to DPI port 5. These drives can serve the following purposes.

Unconnected Messaging: This enables other network devices, such as PanelView, to interact with drives directly without going via the network scanner.

Adapter Routing: Connect a PC to one drive, and it will communicate directly with all other Allen-Bradley drives connected to the same network without going via the network scanner.

100% Accessibility: 100% of all parameters are accessible through the network.

Autobaud: This capability makes initial connections less of a challenge.

Change of State: It decreases network bandwidth greatly by setting up control messages to be delivered exclusively in response to customer-defined states. Individual node setting that is flexible

Peer Control: This allows for master-slave type control between drives, allowing one or more slave drives (users) to operate dependent on the state of a master drive (producer), which can also greatly lessen network traffic.

Automatic Device Replacement: By allowing the scanner to be set up to automatically recognize a new drive and download the necessary parameter settings, it saves a lot of time and work when changing a drive.

Flexible Fault Configuration: Adapters can be configured to communicate user-configurable logic control and speed reference values, as well as to execute fault-based actions such as a ramp to stop, a coast-to-halt, and holding the last state. Additionally, different responses can be used depending on whether the network had a significant issue (broken cable, etc.) or was idle.
