The 1772-AF unit is a Fiber-Optic Converter Module belonging to Allen-Bradley. Rockwell Automation is the manufacturing company behind the unit. As the name suggests, the Fiber-Optic Converter module converts light to signals of electrical energy for transmission in the twinaxial cable as well as converts the electrical signal from the twinaxial cable to light so it can travel in the fiber-optic cable. It allows for the routing of signals through cables in noisy electrical environments as well as the transmission of Remote I/O signals and DH+ over fiber-optic cable. 57,600 bits per second and 115,200 bits per second are the communication rates supported by the module. The current rating or the amount of current that can be handled is 600 milliampere (mA). It can fit into the chassis of the 1771 I/O module using a single slot.
The 1772-AF Fiber-Optic Converter Module has two modes of operation Star and point-to-point mode. Most applications use star mode as the fiber-optic modules act as active directional repeaters or converters. The module in star mode receives signals on one channel, amplifies the,m and retransmit them on the remaining channels. In star mode, one should disable all unused channels, especially the twinaxial channel. The other mode, point-to-point is used when the user has redundant cables, and the loss of a channel would be crucial to the user’s application. Two cables of the same type are connected in parallel to paired channels. If one channel fails and one cable fails, the module switches to the other automatically. The user should apply redundancy to both the twinaxial and fiber-optic cable.
