The 1785-KA is a communication module adapter by Allen-Bradley. It has a data highway plus RS-232-C port for the local area network that supports peer to peer communication between the computer and the PLCs. The data highway plus network is capable of connecting up to two hundred and fifty-five (255) nodes and the communication speed is 57600 Bps. The connections cables available for the system are the asynchronous RS-232-C cable, the data terminal interface cable that is label Cat. No. 1770-CG or similar, the modem interface cable label Cat.No.1770-CP or similar.

For effective operation, the system should be subjected to temperatures within 0 to 60 degrees Celsius but the temperature range increases for storage at -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. The voltage rating for the communication module is five (5) volts DC and the current rating is 1.2 amperes. The estimated shipping weight was found to be 0.9 kilograms and the dimensions measure 2.5 centimeters by 27.9 centimeters by 15.2 centimeters.

To select the most preferred communication option, the 1785-KA module comes with six switches assemblies. The switch assembly 1 SW-1 is used to choose the communication rates for data highway network and data highway network plus ports. For 57600 Bits per second, both the DH and DH+ switches should be set to OFF. The switch assembly SW-2 and SW-3 should also be set at OFF since they are also for future use. To set the node address of the module on both data highway and data highway plus networks, the switch assembly SW-4, SW-5 and SW-6.
